 | Damien Smith was born in Sydney, Australia but now lives and works in Perth, Western Australia. He started sailing when he was a teenager and went on to sail Lasers at university and later, OK Dinghies, including competing in a world championships. While studying Naval Architecture at the University of New South Wales, Damien worked as a design engineer for Optimum Control, a control valve manufacturer. He did his university thesis on "Performance Optimisation of Sailing Dinghies".
After moving to Perth to work in Western Australia’s world leading fast ferry industry, he became involved with the Australian Catamaran Challenge syndicate, designing the C Class catamaran Ronstan. Damien Smith Design was established in 2004.
